1. Avoid concomitant use of azathioprine with allopurinol, unless supervised by an appropriate specialist.
2. Monitoring of azathioprine is essential. Mycophenolate mofetil has been used (unlicensed indication) by the gastroenterologists for resistant Crohn’s disease in patients unable to tolerate alternative immunosuppressants. It is not recommended for GP prescribing for this indication

Different formulations of the same immunosuppressant may vary in bioavailability - it is important not to change formulation except on the advice of a transplant specialist.
