1. A simple sodium chloride mouthwash may be made by adding one to two teaspoonfuls of salt to a pint of freshly boiled and cooled water.
2. Sodium chloride or thymol mouthwashes may be used to relieve pain from traumatic ulceration.
3. Chlorhexidine may be used as an antiseptic to prevent secondary infection in mouth ulcers or following oral surgery. It can also prevent the formation of plaque.
4. Hydrogen peroxide has a mechanical cleansing action particularly useful to release oral debris post trauma or surgery. To be diluted one part of hydrogen peroxide to five parts of water.
5. All above products are available over the counter.
