1. Propranolol is included for the management of conditions such as thyrotoxicosis, migraine and anxiety. The modified-release capsules should be reserved for patients where a once daily preparation is essential for compliance.
2. Labetalol is included for the treatment of hypertension in pregnancy, whilst the injectable preparation may be used in a hypertensive crisis.
3. Metoprolol is a short-acting agent which may be used in secondary care post myocardial infarction and as an adjunct in heart failure (unlicensed indication).
4. The CSM advises that the use of SOTALOL should be limited to the treatment of ventricular arrhythmias or prophylaxis of supraventricular arrhythmias. Treatment with sotalol should commence only under specialist supervision.
5. Both Bisoprolol (a once daily long-acting beta-blocker) and Carvedilol (a twice daily beta-blocker) are used as adjuncts in heart failure. See NICE Clinical Guideline on Heart Failure
